The Driving Standards Agency LGV driving test comprises of:
Safety checks:
You will be asked to demonstrate or explain up to five different safety checks relating to the vehicle that you are taking your test in
Reverse exercise:
This takes place in an off road situation at the Driving Test Station. You are required to reverse your vehicle in a restricted space under full control, with good observations and reasonable accuracy over a prescribed route.
Controlled stop
This is not dissimilar to the controlled stop required for the car driving test, however, this takes place in an off road situation at the Driving Test Station.
The drive
You will be asked to drive the vehicle on a route of the examiners choice. The route may take in town centres, country roads and even a trip on the Motorway. You will be expected to drive the vehicle safely, legally and under full control at all times in a fashion relative to the road and traffic conditions at that actual time. You will have to show good awareness of the actions of other road users who might not understand the handling characteristics of a Large Goods Vehicle.
If you are taking the C+E test, you will be required to demonstrate how to uncouple and recouple the trailer. This takes place at the Driving Test Station and is usually the last practical demonstration of the test.
