The route to obtaining your Vocational L.G.V. Licence with Ian Markwick Driver Training.
- Fill in your details on the "Contact us" page or give us a ring on 01949 836060. If you need the Vocational Licence Application Pack that includes the "D2" licence application and "D4" medical forms, we will post it to you on that same day.
- Have the medical form completed by a doctor. You can go to any doctor for this but we recommend that you use Cotswold Medicals at www.driversmedicals.com , telephone number 0870 609 1540, who charge less than most GPs and have locations up and down the country. Send the completed medical form "D4" together with the licence application form "D2" and your pink driver's licence and green paper counterpart to the D.V.L.A. at Swansea (it takes between four days and up to four weeks for your application to be processed - depending on how busy the DVLA are). .
- While you are waiting, start studying for the Module 1 Theory Test (see Theory test) .
- As soon as the DVLA return your driving licence with your provisional LGV entitlement, you should apply for your module 1 Theory and Hazard PerceptionTests either by telephone on 0300 200 1122 or on-line at www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtest. These tests can be taken at any of the Theory Test Centres up and down the country and have to be booked separately. They can be taken either back to back on the same day or if you wish, you can arrange to take them at different locations on different days. .
- Contact Ian Markwick Driver Training Ltd to book an assessment drive. The assessment drive costs £40.00, lasts for around 1 ½ - 2 hours and often takes place at weekends. Your instructor will give a demonstration drive and then it's your turn behind the wheel. The route will start in a quiet area and as long as you are doing well, will continue taking in single carriageways, dual carriageways and built up areas. Your instructor will be able to assess your driving and recommend the correct amount of training to you before you commit you and your money to a "set duration" practical training course. The cost of the practical training will depend on how much training you actually have. This is also an ideal opportunity to iron out any points regarding the Theory Tests that may seem unclear. .
- Inform us as soon as you have passed your module 1 Theory Tests so that we may discuss dates for your Practical Driving Course and assign a date for your Module 3 Practical Test. We will take care of the practical test booking procedure for you. .
- Take the driving course and pass your Module 3 Practical Test. .
- Well done! When you have passed your Module 3 Practical Test, your examiner will issue you with a lovely blue pass certificate and will offer to send your provisional licence to the D.V.L.A. for upgrading to full LGV entitlement (they can "fast track" the system and it saves you a stamp!). .
- Depending upon when you passed your car driving test and whether you intend to use your LGV licence professionally will depend upon whether you need to take your Module 2 Theory and Module 4 practical Driver CPC tests. Please see Driver CPC section for this information.
- If you are unfortunate enough to fail your Module 3 or Module 4 test you will only need to re-take the relevant test. You will generally have a two hour warm up prior to your re-test but occasionally, we might recommend that you would benefit from additional training taken beforehand. DSA regulations state that you have to wait three days before you can re-take a practical test. .
- When your licence is received back from the DVLA you will find that having passed your LGV category C driving test you now have LGV category C+E provisional licence on your green paper counterpart. Contact Ian Markwick Driver Training Ltd again and get yourself booked in for the next available LGV C+E course. This time, there's no medical and no theory test. The cab and controls are identical as in the category C vehicle - You've just got to get your head around how to drive a longer vehicle that bends in the middle! .
